The Lizards Of Hertfordshire

about

To say that your beloved Amanda has something of a complex relationship with her adoptive county would be... an understatement..? There are lots of BMWs with 'personality' number plates in Hertfordshire. Amanda does not drive one of them... and glares accusingly at them when they pass her, in convoy, in the street. In any case... this little head-tapper went through three complete sets of lyrics (and titles) before arriving where we are today. One version of the song was basically a message left on God's answerphone... which all fell together rather readily, but somehow felt a bit glib around a week later when the dust had settled.

The final song, anyway (written partly as a homage to WFMU's rather wonderful "Bad Animals" radio show - which would, alas, never exist in the UK...), warns the inhabitants of Hertfordshire (and probably some of lower Bedfordshire) to avoid becoming lizards, if at all possible. It was written and mostly recorded on a tuning-resistant 12-string guitar which came from a charity shop in Hitchin and cost £20... the latter being painted in a sort of 'bacon and eggs' sunburst and possessed of a neck with the approximate dimensions of a grandfather clock. Amanda suffers for her art, you know.
